  • The responsibilities of the Communications & Research Lead are as follows:
  • Lead 482Forward digital organizing strategy including supporting member organizations
  • Support Michigan Education Justice Coalition digital communications strategy
  • Managing and producing content for Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and 482Forward website
  • Lead 482Forward earned media and manage press relationships
  • Participate and represent 482Forward in WeMakeMichigan
  • Lead Communications Committee, 482TALKS
  • The Communications Lead will lead 482TALKS, our communications committee, and our communications work more broadly. The overall goal of our communications is to support our organizing and power-building. How we implement this is really open to being shaped by the incoming communications lead
  • The committee work will include 1-1s with existing and potential committee members, annual goal-setting, leading monthly committee meetings and driving the communications projects
  • The direct communications work will likely include leading or contracting for our branding and campaign messaging, website and social media. The exact goals for this piece will be set in collaboration with the Organizing Director
  • Lead 482Forward Research Team Work plans above are open to be customized for what works with the skill set of the Communications Lead and will be crafted in collaboration with the Director of Organizing.

The role will evolve over time, but you will:

  • Build, maintain, and manage 482Forward Human Resources department including leading staff onboarding, building and following HR policies, and maintaining an up-to-date staff handbook
  • Manage all the day-to-day accounting functions of our organization, including ensuring quality control over financial transactions, payroll, and financial reporting -Maintain, design, document, and improve accurate financial reporting, fiscal policies, accounting procedures, and the technology that powers them
  • Own important compliance functions like leading our annual audit, tax reporting, grant reporting, and related transactions by maintaining accurate revenue and cost allocations
  • Provide staff with knowledge, policies, and skills to manage the financial aspects of their jobs -Provide monthly reporting to board and partners about the fiscal health of the organization
  • Maintain and manage the organizational relationship between 482Forward and The Back Office Operation of Michigan (BOOM)
  • Play a key role in supporting annual budget development and mid-year budget reviews

482Forward is looking for a candidate with the following characteristics:

  • Nonprofit finance and accounting expertise and ability to manage complex financials including multiple grants.
  • Your expertise does not come from a certain number of years in the field or type of degree; it comes from the experience of successfully and responsibly leading the accounting functions and tasks of a nonprofit organization. You have led processes around cost allocation systems, department- or program-level reporting and analysis, and financial audit preparation. You demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of how finance and operations must follow from, and enable what, the organization wants to achieve programmatically.
